What does "hardcore RPG player" mean to you?
How far would you go in hardcoreness?
What is too much even for a hardcore gamer?

To me being a "hardcore RPG player" means having played several RPG's of a different style or a variation of systems for a long time.

That's why I spent many of my time with playing them and trying to find out what make's them so special. To go for this harcoreness I'd like to complete as many of these games as possible to see how the story progresses and which variations multiple plays can offer.

This brings a lot of player's in conflict with real life I think - here we reach the question of the limit's of this playing style. I don't want my real life to stop, there's still something else worth living for. It's a important think for me but I still want to fullfill all the quest's that "real life" offers. :-)

Plus plalying a game that offer's too much frustration is even too much for a harcore gamer. I recently experienced this and even if the game itself is great it still keep's me away from it. In the end it's to hard to beat so I don't feel fun anymore - I give up in the very end.

What exactly makes a hardcore game too hard for a hardcore gamer?

To me, being hardcore is submitting to stringent rules and conditions in order to experience the most challenging experience of a game. For instance, if the idea is to have a "realistic" experience, then it's "hardcore" to have to rest at night, eat regularly, obey physics rules of a world. It gets to be too much when it's less like a vacation to an interesting new place and more like a daily slog against homesickness.

If it can not be beat it even after several tries and even if you try very, very hard. That can mean having to face too many enemies, having to trouble with bad controls or if even the best or strangest strategy can't make you have success at a certain point. It's bad if you want to make progress in a game you like because of that. For me it often let's me leave the fingers off the game and turn to another game.

So is this problem usually combat related?

Having thought about it again I mostly have troubles with combat's in RPG's. Other things like uncertain quest description or unclear destination's sometimes also occur. But most times it's a fight that need's to be completed in order to push forward that I can not win that make's me getiin's stuck in a RPG.

Heavy puzzles can be frustrating, too. ;-) But there can still be a chance left, if there are enough hints in there that can give you the chance of solving it.
In the end of it I'm afraid it's impossible to avoid getting stuck from time to time. :-)
The only exception from this would be to lower the coreness of a game but that would suck for some gamers, too.

Have you ever deleted a game because of its high difficulty level?
