The generic purpose of this feature is to raise the playing hours without adding new content.

Works perfectly in the game I play, in case you still play it....

The bad thing there is even a cool story twist shortly before the boss fight and you can imagine a great cutscene as reward after winning the fight but the pain of replaying the whole level is too much here. I talk about 1 1/2 hours of fight after fight here. Very boring.

One more reason might be leveling / upgrading the character. The party learns a lot here and could be such a strong party after this level.

Did you ever give up on a game even if the end was within arm's reach?

Yep, I recently recalled one very remarkable game that is very impressive and did leave a lasting impression on me.
Anyway, I gave up near the final fight. The whole game is controlled with a gamepad. Normally a fine thing, but in this fight not. It's a quick time event
where you have to beat the enemy by pressing two buttons in a very, very quick way to "fight" against the spirit of the boss. If you're not fast enough you
fastly loose and the whole game is lost.

I tried it several times, did change controlls and even tried it out to change the controlls to the keyboard for a even faster performance. No success nowhere.
By the way: the savegame for this one is still on my HDD but found no solution so far how to come around this one. Maybe one day... Would love to see the
end-sequence anyway (without using youtube etc.)

I think I know which game you are talking about. I gave up on it much earlier for the very same reason...
Once I deleted a game because of an insane color puzzle that was near the end boss....
