My take on random encounters...

I hate the general idea of this repetitive crap!

Are you annoyed by random encounters or not?

I'd rather see monsters on the screen so that if I don't feel like fighting them I can avoid them to me this is a much better model than walk 5 steps, fight walk 2 steps, fight. Another cool thing is if your so many levels more powerful than the monsters in a given area have them flee from you in terror!

Avoiding problems is usually possible. It's an aesthetic issue: "should there be new monsters popping up here and there, or should an area be cleaned out and stay cleaned out?" Both opinions have some validity. Is it a better game when you go back to the woods and find a new bear there, after X many rounds? What about crypts? Maybe bears reproduce naturally but ghosts ought to have a finite number.

I dislike the JRPG-style wandering monsters where you get spammed with random attacks just by walking around somewhere.
I do not have a problem with areas being repopulated by monsters over time, or attacks occurring while the party is resting in an unsafe spot.
Basically any enemy should be seen before being encountered, as long as my party is in a state where they are aware.

By the way congrats on getting the site up. I was a Kickstarter backer and it was really a shame this game didn't make it.

They're OK as long as they're not everywhere at all times - Wizardry style. A good game is like a good book: well paced and balanced. A book that constantly bombards you with sword-swinging and fireballs tend to be boring and the same rule applies with RPGs.

Like many others said, some random encounters are OK, but not all the time. Several good suggestions already emerged:

1. The ability to see monsters should help;
2. Monsters appear in specific areas (not all the time and everywhere) - such as dungenons or restricted areas;
3. The pace of random encounter should be also well done.

I like to be able to get into a fight when I am in the mood and to rack up XP, but forced encounters are annoying.

Maybe you should have something in your hand or backpack that attracts them... :)

Meaning? Like a smell? Or a Monster Magic Wand? Not sure if you are trying to be humorous (that's fine); if you are, you can 'punish' the player with random encounter when they are not funny enough (during conversations).

Where and when do you think I could "punish" the players with random monsters?
