Male or female character?

Postby subbassman » Fri Sep 28, 2012 2:04 pm

Would you start a male or a female character? And the reason is?...

I would start a male character since I'm male in real life, so it would help identify with the main game character.
But I often later, after some playing time also take a look how the game turns out if you choose the female site. At some games this makes a different experience and gives new or other possibilties and even leads to totally new quests, that are unavailable to men. So it's often worth taking a look.

As I heard, (ahem...) in MMO's males often choose a female character. I wonder if it's true.

And what about females?

I think most games are too politically correct to make realistically different male and female characters. If they were realistic, there would be broad limits or handicaps as there are for races: males would generally be stronger (like dwarves). Females would generally be smaller and have difficulty with large weapons (talking not about strength but the clumsiness of size ratio here). But women would have more stamina, they might have a faster recuperation rate or gain hit points faster. It would be an interesting choice, then. Now it's just aesthetic.

Hmm. :) apparently no one wants to suggest a handicapping/advantage system to define male/female roles. Don't be shy! We know there are some differences.

If I may (without starting a gender war), maybe females can have an increase in Agility, a penalty in Strength, and males vice versa? In reality, males are generally stronger, but females tend to react more quickly and have better reflexes.

And what about an appearance bonus?

Yes, women surely have a appearance bonus! :D I would also add a bonus on talking/convincing/charming others. It's often hard to say no to a woman... ;)

Ha ha, are women really more persuasive? Or more persistent? Another thing to think of, is this PC reacting with a male or female NPC? that might make a difference too. At least a lot of psychologists think men and women react differently to each other. ;)

Well, men and women can be attracted to their own gender, even outside of a sexual context. They can both be charismatic and inspirational without... well, necessarily looking all that good. :|
